How To Organize Your Way Into An Exercise Routine

Want to Get Organized?

If you’ve been wanting to get into a consistent workout routine, now is a great time to give it a try. As your schedule pivots with kids getting back to school and vacations (sadly) in the rearview mirror, organizing your day is crucial to keeping things running smoothly. Why not prioritize your health and schedule in some time for exercise?

Pick Your Time

We find that getting our workouts done first thing in the morning is the best path to success. Obviously, that isn’t the case for everyone. The key is figuring out what works best for you. Maybe, like us, you hate getting up earlier than necessary but have come to terms with the fact that you have to get your steps in before your other responsibilities take over.

Or maybe you’re a night owl and know there’s a much better chance you’ll stick to your commitment if you work out after dinner.

Access your daily schedule and determine when you can fit a workout in. You’re simply looking to see when you actually have the time. You can come up with a million excuses for why it won’t work on any given day, so finding an hour is the first step. Once you’ve found those 60 minutes, write it in! Digital planner? Paper calendar? Family organization chart? It doesn’t matter what type of schedule you use, just make sure your workouts are included with every other task you have.

Organize Your Outfit

Whether you work out in an old worn out t-shirt or your favorite leggings, make sure they’re clean and ready to go. If you’ve chosen to exercise first thing in the morning, lay out everything you’re going to need (clothes, shoes, weather appropriate gear) the night before. Scrounging around in the dark trying to find a pair of socks is just going to give you time to talk yourself out of getting on the bike or heading out the door.

Also, accessories like water bottles, heart monitors, earbuds and tracking devices should all be put in the same place (and charged!) so you know exactly where they are. Sooner or later, we all say we don’t have time for exercise. Staying organized and making your routine as streamlined as possible saves you from wasting your precious moments frantically searching for this, that or the other thing.

Make It A Priority

There are so many things in our lives that take up our time. And, unfortunately a lot of those things don’t fall into the category of fun and exciting. Doing dishes, washing clothes, cleaning bathrooms…none of that makes the list for activities we’re dying to do. Nevertheless, they have to get done to keep our lives running smoothly. The same philosophy applies to exercise. You may not love to do it, it may seem like there’s not enough time in the day, or there are too many other things that can’t wait. But if you make your workouts non-negotiable, just like grocery shopping or paying bills, you’ll be surprised to find that the time actually exists.

Including your workouts into your schedule ensures that they have a place just like any other task. Take it a day at a time and give yourself some grace as you get used to your new schedule.
