When you’re preparing to put your home on the market, decluttering should be at the top of your to-do list. But the everyday decluttering you do keep your spaces organized is different than the decluttering you do when you’re getting ready to move.

The goal of everyday decluttering is to have a home that works for you. You can find what you need, your daily chores are easier to tackle and your family should be able to handle tasks without your help.

But when you’re decluttering to get ready for a move, the goals are entirely different. You’ll have to make decisions about what items you’ll want/have room for in your new home, you’ll have to decide what you’ll need while your home is on the market vs what things can be temporarily stored and you may have to make much harder decisions about what can stay. Because unfortunately, at the end of the day, keeping too much has the potential to cost you a lot of money.

When you’re decluttering your home for daily upkeep, holding on to too many possessions can mean that your spaces don’t function as well as you want them to. But when you don’t declutter properly for a move, it can cost you real money because the moving company will charge based on how much stuff you have. And if you choose to move your items to a storage unit for showings rather than make hard decisions about getting rid of things, you’ll potentially have to pay a hefty fee depending on how quickly your home sells. Additionally, if you have too many things when you get to your new home, you may have to pay to have items taken away. Decluttering properly before you move can save you thousands of dollars.

When you’re decluttering for everyday life, the questions to ask yourself are; Do I love it? Do I need it? Do I have space for it? Is it serving its purpose?

But when you’re preparing to move, the questions are quite different;

  • Will I have room for it?
  • Can I envision this item in my new space?
  • Will I replace it with something newer?
  • It is worth the price of paying to move it?

The focus on decluttering for your move should be on your future home, not the space you’re currently in. With this shift in perspective, you may be very surprised at how much you can let go of. For example, if you’re having a hard time making a decision about a large, comfortable but slightly worn recliner, trying to envision it in your new living room can make leaving it behind easier. It may be fine in your current home, but on top of not wanting something worn out in your new shiny space, you have the cost of moving it to consider as well.
