6 Simple Steps To An Organized Fall Wardrobe

Want to Get Organized?

As the air gets crisper, it’s time to trade flip-flops for boots and tank tops for sweaters. A seasonal closet swap helps you feel more organized, reduces clutter, and ensures you’re only keeping what you truly love. Taking time now to edit your summer things before you bring out your cold weather belongings will make all of your transitions easier throughout the year.

Here are 6 steps to make your swap simple and stress-free:

In order to have an organized home, it’s just as important to put things away properly as it is to bring things out. Before you start unpacking your fall clothes and decor, make sure you:

  • Wash and dry your summer items before storing to prevent stains and odors
  • Use breathable bins or fabric storage bags for your delicate clothing instead of plastic to avoid trapping moisture
  • Store bathing suits, summer tops and lightweight dresses in under-bed bins, the top of your closet, or a labeled storage tote to free up valuable space for cold weather gear

Hopefully as you edit your wardrobe consistently and shop more intentionally, you’ll have less items to donate. Donation is, of course, better than throwing things away, but many charitable organizations and donation centers are overwhelmed with the things you don’t want. If you’ve purchased an item and it simply didn’t work – we all make mistakes! – donating sooner rather than later is better. Here are some questions to ask yourself when switching out your summer clothes:

“Did I wear it this summer?”

If the answer is no—or if it doesn’t fit your style anymore—donate it.

“Is it a duplicate item and do I choose the other one more often?”

If the answer is yes and you need extra room in your closet –donate it.

“Am I holding on to it because it doesn’t currently fit?”

If you answered yes and it’s an item that would be easily replaced, go ahead and donate it now. Most of us hang on to clothing in case it will work/fit at a later date, but often when the time comes the item is outdated or you want something new. Donate it now to give someone else a chance to enjoy it while it’s still fashionable.

Pro Tip: Keep a basket or bag handy during the swap so donations don’t pile up and get them into your car as soon as possible so you can drop them off while you’re doing other errands.

To keep your home running efficiently, it’s not enough to just switch out seasonal items. If you can do so in an organized way with functional systems in mind, your transitions will go more smoothly and you’re more likely to have an organized home all year round. Some helpful things to keep in mind this fall:

  • Group by Category: sweaters, jeans, boots, coats
  • Use Hooks or Bins: for hats, scarves, and gloves so they don’t get lost
  • Front & Center: keep daily essentials (jackets, cozy shoes, warm layers) where they’re easiest to grab
  • Declutter As You Unpack: edit fall items as you move/unbox them – if you didn’t wear or use them last year, it may be time to donate

While it’s not imperative to have organizing products in your home, there are times when it can be helpful – particularly when it comes to switching out clothes and home decor. If you already own organizing supplies, now is a good time to check bins and boxes for cracks or tears and to ensure labels are still visible and adhered. And if you’re thinking of upgrading or buying new product, this is also the perfect time to evaluate what you may need.

A few things to consider:

  • Swap flimsy hangers for slim, non-slip velvet hangers – this saves space and keeps sweaters and heavier items from sliding off
  • Make sure your plastic bins are holding up and have secure lids to protect your belongings from moisture and insects
  • Evaluate your clothing storage solutions – would your clothes be safer in plastic bins or would it prolong their lifetime if you stored them in breathable fabric?

If you have expensive shoes, you likely take good care of them but do you go to the same effort for your every day shoes? If you plan to keep your summer sandals, flip flops and sneakers, it’s a good idea to do a couple of things before you store them for the winter.

  • Clean, dust and polish any shoes that need some TLC, particularly if you’re going to store them in a box or bin
  • Consider adding shoe forms to your softer shoes to help them keep their shape
  • Think about adding shoe deodorizers to keep your shoes fresh until next summer
  • When you bring out your winter shoes and boots, place your favorites front and center for easy access

One of the best things about fall and winter is making your home feel cozy and warm. In addition to things like fireplaces, soft throws and seasonal decor, fall scents can are one of our favorite upgrades. But it’s not all about candles and plug-ins. You can bring the scent of fall into your wardrobe by adding cedar blocks and scented sachets to your drawers, bins and shelves. Not only do they smell amazing, many scents deter moths and protect your clothing. Win win!
