How We Can Organize Your Manhattan Home

When you’re working with a lot of stuff and not a lot of space, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where to start, but we’re here to help! We’ll tackle your space room by room and work with you to ensure that we’re creating systems that work for your individualized needs.

We focus on creating a boutique-like organization for walk-in closets, improving organization in home offices with desk organization and document management, and improving entryway coat and shoe storage areas.

One of our clients recently moved into an apartment on the Upper East Side with her new partner. She wanted to integrate their belongings so they both felt at home in their new space. We unpacked, sorted, and organized all of their possessions so everything fit together seamlessly and they could live peacefully in their new home.

Having a hard time visualizing what changes can be made around your home? Here are a few things we typically start with:

Kitchen

When decluttering your kitchen, there are quite a few areas we’ll need to tackle – from your pots and pans to your pantry, and underneath the sink. Here are a few things our organizers always keep top of mind:

    1. Most Manhattan pantries are small, so ensuring that everything can fit is one of the biggest battles. One great way to make extra space is by getting rid of as much excess packaging as possible. Instead of keeping individual snacks in the large box they came in, consider using clear stackable bins to utilize as much vertical space as possible.
    2. The key to making the best use of the space underneath your kitchen sink is to ensure that it is only being used for things that are needed in the kitchen. We don’t want to use it as a place to store extra cleaning supplies or random household items. Manhattan kitchens are small enough, utilize this space for as many kitchen essentials as it can fit.
    Living Room

The living room is typically the heart of many Manhattan homes. With many New Yorkers living in either studio or one-bedroom apartments, the living room tends to be the largest (and sometimes only) room. Here’s how we like to think about it:

    • We start by evaluating how you actually live in (and use) your living room, then develop a plan that prioritizes the items you love and need most. We work alongside you to create organizational systems—like designated zones and clever storage solutions—so every book, throw blanket, or remote has its place, helping you maintain a clean, functional space long-term.
    • We don’t just suggest what to let go of—we roll up our sleeves and help you decide which items serve you and which you’re ready to part with. After the sorting process, we ensure unwanted belongings are donated or disposed of responsibly, navigating the unique challenges of Manhattan’s recycling and donation options to keep your home streamlined and clutter-free.
    Bedroom

Your bedroom can often become a dumping ground of things that you don’t want in your living space, but especially in Manhattan where it’s often one of few rooms you have, keeping it organized is important.

    • Your to-do’s should not be in your bedroom. Whether that’s a project looming over your head at work, kids’ clothes that need to be sorted and donated, or returns you haven’t gotten to, it’s impossible to get a good night’s sleep when your brain is so distracted in a space that’s supposed to be calm. With limited space in Manhattan homes, we’ll help you find the space and organization system needed to create a peaceful space that you can enjoy.
    • Too many shoes and don’t know where to start? Our experts will help you to ensure that you keep what you need while letting go of the things that you realistically are not going to get much use out of.  We don’t like this rule of thumb so much because there are so many exceptions to this (winter boots, fancy black tie shoes, etc. that aren’t used every year but are still needed sometimes).
    Bathroom

Manhattan bathrooms tend to be cramped, to say the least! Making efficient use of your space is going to be absolutely crucial. Here are a few things our organizers will start with:

    • Decluttering your products is key to keeping a small bathroom organized and functional. We’ll help you go through all the self care items you’ve accumulated over time – hair accessories, brushes, skincare, heat tools, makeup – and take into consideration how often you use them and whether or not you’d miss them if they were gone. Sounds scary? Think about expiration dates – some of us tend to not realize many products like makeup and skincare have a shelf life of 9-12 months. If we start with clearing through just the expired items, we’ll likely clear out more of the clutter than you even realize!
    • We want to make the most of the storage under your sink, since it’s highly likely that your Manhattan bathroom doesn’t have a closet that you can store your things in (or it’s a small one). Tiered drawer organizers are great for this. They come in different sizes and allow you to use the entire depth of the cabinet without needing to climb to the very back in order to grab your products.

Hi! We’re Ann Lightfoot and Kate Pawlowski, a mother-daughter team who discovered our calling as professional organizers over a decade ago. We started Done & Done Home after helping a friend with a move and realizing how much we loved transforming cluttered spaces into organized havens. Now, we lead a dedicated team of twelve, handling everything from hands-on organizing to creating social media content and sharing practical tips in our book, Love Your Home Again, and its companion course, From Chaos to Calm.

Our mission is simple: to help women thrive by making life’s transitions smoother and providing meaningful employment opportunities. We believe that an organized life is a happier life, and we can’t wait to help you create a space you truly love.

    The Done & Done Method

Our proven method will help you to not only get organized, but stay organized. We start with analyzing what you have and deciding what needs to stay and what needs to go. Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to organize in a way that makes sense for your space. Lastly, it’s all about maintaining the work you’ve done. An effective organization method is one that you can stay on top of to keep your spaces clutter-free and organized over time.
